The Fringe
The Fringe is a long-running Boston free-jazz ensemble founded in 1971 by tenor saxophonist George Garzone, bassist Richard Appleman, and drummer Bob Gullotti. The group was created as an outlet for unrestricted improvisation and has performed for Boston-area jazz audiences for more than five decades.
Today’s lineup features Garzone on tenor saxophone, veteran bassist John Lockwood, and drummer Francisco Mela. Lockwood joined after Appleman departed in 1985 to lead Berklee College’s Bass Department, while Mela took over the drum chair following Gullotti’s death in 2020. All three musicians are also active as session performers and educators.
