Seminar: Michael Clayton

290 Harvard Street, Brookline, MA 02446

Featuring: Mikal J. Gaines, Ph.D.

Seminar: Michael Clayton is a 30-minute film discussion led by Mikal J. Gaines, Ph.D., of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The program uses Tony Gilroy’s 2009 film as a starting point for examining corporate corruption, ethical compromise, and the perspective of people who operate just outside powerful institutions.

The seminar focuses on the story of Michael Clayton, a legal “fixer” played by George Clooney who becomes entangled in corporate espionage after his law firm knowingly represents a corrupt chemical company. It also considers the film as an example of “halogencore,” a term for stories about corporate intrigue and wrongdoing told from the viewpoint of someone on the periphery of the system.
