Osvaldo Golijov and Alan Lightman: Awe and Understanding
Osvaldo Golijov and Alan Lightman meet for a pre-concert conversation about how people search for meaning in a universe that can exceed human understanding. The composer and the physicist, novelist, and essayist will consider the relationship between awe, creativity, reason, music, and scientific discovery, including whether art and science offer different ways of approaching the same enduring mysteries.
The conversation takes place before the culminating performance of the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Creation festival. Drawing in part on Lightman’s *The Miraculous from the Material* and Golijov’s curiosity-driven creative work, the discussion will be moderated by Jennifer L. Roberts and will explore the origins of awe, the insights creativity can provide beyond reason alone, and why unanswered mysteries continue to inspire artists and scientists.
