Modal Music Session
Modal Music Session is a participatory gathering led by Tev Stevig for musicians and singers interested in learning and playing modal music together. The session welcomes people of all experience levels and backgrounds, whether they want to perform, sing along, or simply listen, while building a shared repertoire drawn from Turkish, Greek, Armenian, Persian, Arabic, and other modal traditions.
When: Monday, November 9, 2026
Showtimes: 7:30–9:00 p.m.
Venue: Powers Music School, 160 Lexington St., Main Building
Led by: Tev Stevig
Description: Participants will meet other modal musicians from the Boston area and play together in a group setting. Bowed and plucked strings, percussion, woodwinds, brass, and vocals are all suitable. Piano students are welcome to participate as vocalists, and beginners or people new to modal music may play, sing along, or listen.
Ages: Musicians ages 10 and up are encouraged to attend.
Tickets: Free, with a suggested $20 donation to help cover venue and session-leader expenses. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
RSVP: RSVPs are encouraged so organizers can notify attendees of schedule changes, although participants may also attend without one.
Schedule: Sessions generally take place at 7:30 p.m. each month at Powers unless otherwise noted. Attendees can sign up for as many sessions as they wish.
Parking: Free parking is available in front of the building and in the lot at the corner of Lexington and Beech Streets.
Public transportation: Powers Music School is within walking distance of Waverly Square, served by the MBTA Commuter Rail’s Fitchburg Line and the 73 bus.
Accessibility: The main floor currently requires guests to climb a short flight of stairs. Powers is working toward improving access for people with limited mobility, but the project has not yet received a formal start or completion timeline.
Resources: Additional session information is available through Tev Stevig’s website and Labyrinth New England’s Resources page.
