El Topo in 35mm
El Topo is presented in a 35mm screening as part of the Somerville Theatre’s Cult Cinema Tuesdays series. Alejandro Jodorowsky writes, directs, and stars as El Topo, a master gunslinger and mystic whose attempt to defeat four expert marksmen leads him through a strange, allegorical journey toward self-awareness and resurrection. The film combines classic Americana and European avant-garde influences with elements drawn from Zen Buddhism and the Bible.
Originally released in 1970, the film became a landmark of independent cinema and helped establish the midnight-movie phenomenon after early screenings at New York’s Elgin Theater, where it gained additional attention through the support of John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
