Daughters of the Dust
Julie Dash’s landmark film Daughters of the Dust follows a multigenerational Gullah family living on the Sea Islands off South Carolina at the beginning of the 20th century. Descended from formerly enslaved West Africans who preserved elements of Yoruba traditions, the family wrestles with how to protect its cultural heritage and folklore while considering a move to the mainland, farther from its ancestral roots.
The film was the first wide theatrical release directed by a Black woman and received substantial critical and audience acclaim after its original 1991 release. Its influence continues to be felt, including in Beyoncé’s visual album *Lemonade*. The screening features guests from The Huntington’s production of *Adia & Clora Snatch Joy*, which runs November 24 through December 13, 2026, at the Huntington Theatre.
