New on View: Community and Self-Representation in the David and Jane Shapiro Collection
This gallery talk explores *Community and Self-Representation in the David and Jane Shapiro Collection*, an installation focused on how Black artists from the late 20th century portrayed community, interior life, leisure, and everyday rituals. Leah Yeshitila discusses layered representations of Black men in settings ranging from D9 collegiate fraternities to barbershops, offering an alternative to media portrayals centered on trauma in Black life.
The works come from David and Jane Shapiro’s gift to the Harvard Art Museums. The program is part of the museums’ New on View series, which presents recent gallery installations and new perspectives on recent acquisitions and longtime favorites.
