Jerry Bergonzi Quartet
The Jerry Bergonzi Quartet brings veteran tenor saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi to The Lilypad for a high-powered jazz performance. Bergonzi is known for a John Coltrane-influenced sound, command of chord changes, and imaginative playing, and has maintained a strong Boston following as both a performer and educator.
Bergonzi began on clarinet at age eight, moved to alto saxophone at 12, and took up tenor two years later. Influenced by Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, and Hank Mobley, he studied at Lowell University before working locally as an electric bassist and eventually moving to New York in 1972. After seven years there, he gained wider recognition through Two Generations of Brubeck and the Dave Brubeck Quartet, appearing on several Concord albums from 1979 to 1981. He returned to Boston in 1981 and went on to lead groups including Con Brio and Gonz, while recording for Plug, Not Fat, Red, and Blue Note.
