Nonfiction Night: The Paranormal Ranger
Nonfiction Night is a monthly book discussion group focused on nonfiction from a broad range of subjects. This session discusses former Navajo Ranger Stanley Milford Jr.’s 2024 memoir, *The Paranormal Ranger: A Navajo Investigator’s Search for the Unexplained*, which examines the strange and often disturbing cases he encountered while serving the Navajo Nation.
Milford describes his upbringing in Navajo and Cherokee traditions, his belief that the supernatural can intersect with everyday life, and his work as a Navajo Ranger. The memoir covers investigations involving livestock mutilations, skinwalkers, cryptids, unidentified aerial phenomena, and hostile hauntings. It approaches these incidents through Milford’s training in law enforcement and his perspective as a Native American investigator, rather than through conspiracy theories or sensationalism. The Navajo Rangers combine law enforcement with archaeological conservation and historical responsibilities while overseeing the 27,000-square-mile Navajo Nation.
