The Fringe is a long-running free-jazz ensemble known for adventurous improvisation and more than five decades of performances for Boston-area jazz audiences. Founded in 1971 by tenor saxophonist George Garzone, bassist Richard Appleman, and drummer Bob Gullotti, the group continues with Garzone, bassist John Lockwood, and drummer Francisco Mela.

The band’s members are also active session musicians and educators. Appleman left in 1985 to lead Berklee’s Bass Department, after which Lockwood joined the group.
