The Fringe
The Fringe brings more than five decades of free-jazz improvisation to The Lilypad. Founded in 1971 by tenor saxophonist George Garzone, bassist Richard Appleman, and drummer Bob Gullotti, the group has long been a fixture of Boston’s jazz scene. The current trio features Garzone with bassist John Lockwood and drummer Francisco Mela.
The band’s history includes Appleman’s departure in 1985 to lead Berklee’s Bass Department, followed by Lockwood’s arrival, and Gullotti’s passing in 2020. Mela now occupies the drum chair. All three musicians are also active session players and educators who have worked with leading contemporary jazz artists.
