Delight of the Muses
Delight of the Muses is a Boston Modern Orchestra Project concert conducted by Gil Rose, bringing together four eclectic works centered on inspiration, memory, language, and musical history. The program opens with the world premiere of Anthony De Ritis’s orchestral-and-electronic work, followed by Samuel Barber’s celebrated setting of James Agee’s recollection of a summer evening. Soprano Julia Bullock also performs two arias from Matthew Aucoin’s meditation on memory, language, and loss.
The concert concludes with Charles Wuorinen’s Delight of the Muses, a Mozart homage drawing on material from Don Giovanni. The work serves as an irreverent, theatrical finale, shifting among comic, sentimental, and exuberant moods.
