Jerry Bergonzi Quartet

The Jerry Bergonzi Quartet brings veteran Boston tenor saxophonist and educator Jerry Bergonzi to The Lilypad for a high-powered jazz performance. Bergonzi is known for a John Coltrane-influenced tone, command of chord changes, and an inventive musical approach. His early influences also included Sonny Rollins and Hank Mobley.

Bergonzi began playing clarinet at age eight, moved to alto saxophone at 12, and switched to tenor two years later. After studying at Lowell University, he played electric bass in local bands while saving money to move to New York in 1972. Following seven years in New York, including work with Two Generations of Brubeck and the Dave Brubeck Quartet and appearances on several Concord albums from 1979 to 1981, he returned to Boston in 1981. Since then, he has built a career as both a performer and teacher, leading groups such as Con Brio and Gonz and recording for the Plug, Not Fat, Red, and Blue Note labels.
