The Mill Girls in Story & Song
The Mill Girls in Story & Song is a 45-minute historical tour about the women who worked in the Boston Manufacturing Company and other textile mills operated by the Boston Associates in Waltham and Lowell. Through stories, artifacts, images, and songs written by mill women and recorded during a museum concert by historical folk singer Diane Taraz, the program examines women’s roles in industrial America.
The tour presents New England’s “mill girls” as the first industrial workforce in the United States. It explores how these workers helped expand the American industrial economy, challenged assumptions about women as breadwinners, and participated in early workers’ rights movements and trade unions.
