Boston Philharmonic Orchestra: Schubert and Bruckner
The Boston Philharmonic Orchestra presents Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, known as the “Unfinished” Symphony, alongside Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5. Benjamin Zander considers Schubert’s unfinished masterpiece one of his favorite works; although Schubert lived for six years after composing it, no one knows why he never completed the symphony. Its extraordinary beauty and enduring familiarity have made it one of the best-loved works in the classical repertoire.
Bruckner’s Fifth Symphony, described as a work of overwhelming grandeur, has been performed only once during the Philharmonic’s nearly half-century history. This performance offers a rare opportunity to hear the orchestra take on its expansive, heaven-storming scale.
