Spotlight Tour: Coloring the Past, with Jide Anekwe ’28
Spotlight Tour: Coloring the Past, with Harvard undergraduate Jide Anekwe ’28, explores how color shaped the ancient Mediterranean world and how modern viewers imagine the past. The conversational tour examines three works: a Roman Imperial Egyptian portrait of a woman dating to approximately 130–150 CE; an Imperial Roman marble sculpture of a youthful hero or god from the first or second century CE, based on a fourth-century BCE Greek sculpture by Skopas; and William Holman Hunt’s *The Miracle of the Sacred Fire, Church of the Holy Sepulchre*, painted between 1892 and 1899.
Spotlight Tours are student-designed and led programs that offer thematic perspectives on the Harvard Art Museums’ collections. The program trains Harvard students to conduct original, research-based tours while developing skills in visual analysis, critical thinking, public speaking, and leadership.
