Joe Hunt Group
The Joe Hunt Group presents modern jazz by a quartet of leading Boston-area musicians at The Lilypad. The group is led by drummer, educator, author, and jazz historian Joe Hunt, whose career has included performances and recordings with George Russell, Stan Getz, Bill Evans, Chet Baker, Eric Dolphy, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Charles Mingus, Bob Brookmeyer, Herb Pomeroy, and many others.
Hunt’s work has also included the National Jazz Ensemble, groups led with John Scofield, Mike Stern, and Santi Debriano, tours with Red Rodney and Hal McKusick, the Smithsonian Jazz Masters Orchestra, and collaborations with Gunther Schuller, Kenny Burrell, Joe Lavano, Joanne Brackeen, and Tal Farlow. He wrote the 1994 book *52nd Street Beat*, a history of influential jazz drummers from 1945 through 1965. The quartet often devotes its performances to the music of a notable composer or performer; recent tributes have included Burt Bacharach, Ahmad Jamal, Bill Evans, and Gigi Gryce, with future programs featuring Paul and Carla Bley and Johnny Mandel.
