Being Heumann
Being Heumann is a 127-minute, R-rated film directed by Academy Award winner Siân Heder, based on the true story of disability-rights activist Judy Heumann. In 1977, a young disabled woman and a determined coalition of outsiders take over a federal government building after their calls for action are ignored. What begins as an impulsive protest grows into the longest occupation of a federal building in American history, as hundreds refuse to leave until officials address their demands.
The film follows the movement’s accidental leaders as they navigate rebellion, internal challenges, and the effort to create a path where none existed before. Ruth Madeley stars as the young Judy Heumann, with Mark Ruffalo portraying the bureaucrat whose response could determine the outcome of the occupation. The story is presented as revolutionary, irreverent, and deeply human, focusing on the people fighting to change the lives of millions.
