The Coalboilers

The Coalboilers are a distinctive acoustic duo from Boston’s North Shore, featuring guitarist Gary Backstrom and rhythm guitarist Charley Carrozo. Their performances combine instrumental and vocal improvisation, spontaneous reinterpretations of songs, and extended musical transitions that can continue for hours without a planned set list or breaks between songs.

Backstrom is known for virtuosic guitar solos, while Carrozo anchors the grooves and responds to the music’s unexpected turns. Their close musical chemistry comes from more than two decades of performing together, dating back to their first show at The Attic in Newton in 1996, the venue that inspired their name. The duo describes their live shows as an experience unlike that of a typical acoustic act.
