white phoenix
White Phoenix is a sweeping family drama by Shenzhen-born playwright Yide Cai, presented on the Snodgrass Stage as part of Boston Playwrights’ Theatre’s Fall Rep Festival. Told by two actors in a single-room setting, the play follows Li CunYi, a Chinese orphan who promises to reunite with his sister, Li CunXin, after she is adopted by an American family.
As the siblings’ lives unfold across China and the United States, CunYi becomes involved with the daughter of a powerful political family, whose support both assists and complicates his search. Their eventual reunion is shaped by romance, political influence, and the complex relationship between the two countries. The production is directed by Dmitry Troyanovsky.
