Eraserhead
David Lynch’s startling debut feature, *Eraserhead*, is a surreal cult classic shaped by the writings of Franz Kafka and Nikolai Gogol. Set in a dystopian industrial wasteland, the film follows Henry Spencer, a perpetually bewildered pencil-factory worker whose relationship with his girlfriend takes an unsettling turn. The film’s strange imagery includes mutant babies, women singing inside radiators, and dancing roasted chickens.
The film has been celebrated by critics and filmmakers as a landmark in cinema. Stanley Kubrick reportedly screened it repeatedly for the cast and crew of *The Shining* while developing that film’s atmosphere, and artist H.R. Giger has also cited it as a favorite. In 2004, the Library of Congress added *Eraserhead* to the National Film Registry.
