About the leader: Dr. Callahan’s graduate research examined how poets used language and metaphor to reimagine space, place, history, and identity, with a focus on the transnational exchange of ideas about freedom among poets in Cuba, Brazil, and the United States during the latter half of the 19th century. Her current poetry project explores the experiences of pregnant enslaved women in the Americas during the 19th and early 20th centuries, including the effects of imperial, colonial, and slave-holding systems and the body’s role in negotiating the boundary between life and death in the context of slave births.
