Jerry Bergonzi Quartet
Jerry Bergonzi Quartet presents a high-powered jazz performance led by tenor saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi, whose sound reflects the influence of John Coltrane and whose playing is known for its command of chord changes and imaginative approach. The performance is seated and features a quartet with a special guest on trumpet.
Bergonzi began playing clarinet at age eight, moved to alto saxophone at 12, and took up tenor two years later. Influenced by Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, and Hank Mobley, he studied at Lowell University before working as an electric bassist in local bands and moving to New York in 1972. After seven years there, he gained recognition with Two Generations of Brubeck and the Dave Brubeck Quartet, appearing on several Concord albums from 1979 to 1981. He returned to Boston in 1981 and built a career as both a tenor saxophonist and educator, leading groups including Con Brio and Gonz and recording for Plug, Not Fat, Red, and Blue Note.
