Jonathan Suazo
Jonathan Suazo presents a live album-release concert celebrating *Ricano Vol. 2* at City Winery Boston. The Puerto Rican saxophonist, composer, and educator combines Afro-Caribbean musical traditions with contemporary jazz, using emotionally driven compositions to explore Caribbean rhythms, history, heritage, and lived experience.
Named by the GRAMMYs as one of the ten most promising emerging jazz artists in 2023, Suazo released his debut album *Ricano* that year, which The New York Times selected as one of its best jazz albums of 2023. His latest release, *Ricano Vol. 2*, earned a four-star review from *DownBeat*. Suazo is a Berklee Global Jazz Institute Master of Music graduate and has received recognition including the 2024 Chamber Music America New Jazz Works Grant, the WBUR Makers Series Award, a South Arts Jazz Road Tours Grant, and the Berklee Urban Service Award for humanitarian work supporting Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.
His music has been described by critics as lyrical, emotionally deep, sophisticated, and ambitious. His performance and collaboration history includes work with Miguel Zenón, Terri Lyne Carrington, David Sánchez, Benito González, Zaccai Curtis, Charlie Sepúlveda, Gonzalo Grau, Danilo Pérez, Ricky Rodriguez, iLÉ, Calma Carmona, Bob Moses, Joe Lovano, Paoli Mejías, Humberto Ramírez, David Rivera, Tito Matos, Ricardo Pons, William Cepeda, Jon Secada, Pedro Capó, Obie Bermúdez, Hans Glawischnig, Silverio Pérez, and Tony Escapa.
