Makoto Fujimura: A Portal of New Creation
Makoto Fujimura, a Boston-born contemporary painter, presents an exploration of “Kainos,” or newness understood as transformation. Drawing on his book *Art + Faith: A Theology of Making*, Fujimura will discuss art, hope, healing, redemption, and the creative process, while sharing work from *Qu4rtets*, his collaborative project inspired by T.S. Eliot’s *Four Quartets*.
The program also features a Boston Symphony Orchestra string quartet performing music connected to Eliot’s poetic masterpiece, including movements from two of Beethoven’s late quartets. Fujimura is known for a contemplative “slow art” practice rooted in centuries-old Japanese Nihonga techniques. His work is held by collections such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo and the Saint Louis Art Museum.
