Fatherland (2026)
Fatherland (2026) is a historical drama directed by Paweł Pawlikowski, focusing on the complicated relationship between Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann and his daughter, Erika Mann, an actress, writer, and rally driver. Set in the summer of 1949, the film follows them on an emotionally difficult road trip through a Germany devastated and divided after World War II, traveling from American-controlled Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar in a black Buick.
Returning to Germany after 16 years of exile in the United States, Thomas must confront both the fractured state of his homeland and the deep divisions within his family. In the style of Pawlikowski’s Ida and Cold War, the film explores identity, family, love, and guilt against the uncertainty of postwar Europe.
