The Fringe
The Fringe is a long-running Boston free-jazz ensemble originally founded in 1971 by tenor saxophonist George Garzone, bassist Richard Appleman, and drummer Bob Gullotti. The group is known for its spontaneous improvisation and has performed for Boston-area jazz audiences for more than five decades.
The current lineup features Garzone, bassist John Lockwood, and drummer Francisco Mela. Appleman departed in 1985 to lead Berklee College’s Bass Department, while Mela joined on drums after Gullotti’s death in 2020. All three musicians are also active session players and educators.
