Jerry Bergonzi Quartet
Jerry Bergonzi leads a high-powered jazz quartet at The Lilypad, featuring his tenor saxophone alongside drums, piano, bass, and a special guest on trumpet. Bergonzi is known for a Coltrane-influenced sound, sophisticated command of chord changes, and an imaginative approach to jazz. His musical influences include Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, and Hank Mobley.
Bergonzi began on clarinet at age eight, moved to alto saxophone at 12, and took up tenor two years later. After studying at Lowell University and working as an electric bassist in local bands, he moved to New York in 1972. He later performed with Two Generations of Brubeck and the Dave Brubeck Quartet, appearing on several Concord albums from 1979 to 1981. Bergonzi returned to Boston in 1981, where he established a career as both a performer and educator, led groups including Con Brio and Gonz, and recorded for the Plug, Not Fat, Red, and Blue Note labels.
