Cruising
Al Pacino stars in William Friedkin’s provocative serial-killer thriller *Cruising*. Set in New York’s underground gay scene, the film follows rookie police officer Steve Burns as he goes undercover in the S&M subculture to draw out a murderer targeting its patrons. As Burns becomes increasingly immersed in the investigation, he begins to risk his sense of identity.
Based on the premise and title of reporter Gerald Walker’s novel, *Cruising* was highly controversial when released and remains a challenging, distinctive film. Pacino’s haunted performance anchors the movie, which also features a vivid 1970s New York setting and a forceful punk-rock soundtrack.
